Police finally lodged a case today over suspected human trafficking in Uttarkashi district in which two minor Dalit girls went missing from their village.

The girls aged 15 and 16 had gone missing on February 20 from Paunti village with their families alleging they had been abducted by some people who had visited their relatives in the village.

When the families of the minor Dalit girls approached the police station concerned, authorities there did not lodge a written complaint assuring them of sorting out the matter through negotiations.

As the girls' families remained clueless even a week after the incident, they approached higher authorities yesterday requesting speedy investigation into the case.

However, the police station concerned swung into action today and lodged a case under section 363 of the IPC in connection with the incident when Uttarkashi SSP Dadan Pal himself intervened saying it was a serious case of suspected human trafficking.

The case will be sorted out on priority and no negligence on part of officials will be tolerated, he said.

Investigating officer in the case said the needle of suspicion pointed towards involvement of a woman who is being interrogated.
