The officer-in-charge of Borpathar police station was killed and a constable injured in indiscriminate firing by a suspected gang of car lifters.

The officer Binod Phangso was leading a police team during a crackdown operation in Chungajan area along the Assam-Nagaland border last night when the incident took place, senior officers said.

While chasing, the police team's vehicle confronted indiscriminate firing by a suspected gang of car lifters, officials said.

Along with Phangso, constable Monoj Saikia sustained injuries in the incident.

Both were later rushed to the hospital, where Phangso succumbed to his injuries, they said.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today announced a compensation of Rs 20 lakh for the kin of Phangso, who was killed on duty.

In a statement, Gogoi condemned the heinous killing of the OC and said the government would confer CM's Bravery Award posthumously to the late Phangso.
