Police officer killed in road mishap near Mankoli outpost

The damaged Versova Bridge on Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway number 8 where vehicular traffic has been prohibited, claimed the life of a police officer today, the police said.

Assistant police inspector Vijay M Khare of Narpoli police station in Bhiwandi said that due to prohibition of vehicular traffic on the bridge which is being repaired, traffic has been diverted through Bhiwandi and Mankoli, causing traffic jams.

It was the assistant police inspector Pravin S Sonawane (50) attached to the Thane District Rural Police headquarters who was also among those assigned the task of regulating the traffic and clearing the traffic jams on the road near Mankoli.
 

It was around 9.15 am today when a truck hit his motorbike from behind, near the Mankoli police outpost and crushed him, the police said.

His body has been sent for postmortem, the police said adding that the truck driver has been taken into custody.

An offence has been registered under Sections 279, 304, 427 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act, the police said.

The local Narpoli police station is probing further, the police said.
