Police officer sentenced to 3-yrs in jail for accepting bribe

The Special Judge, Prevention of Corruption Act, today sentenced a police officer to three years imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000 for an official favour.

Ramakrishna, police officer in Adugodi police station, had purchased furniture from the shop of the complainant, Syed Mehaboob, a Lokayukta release said.

When the complainant asked the officer for payment, he refused to make the payment and threatened the complainant alleging there was a case against him and demanded a bribe of Rs 5 lakh to solve it, failing which he (complainant) would be arrested, the release said.
 

Subsequently, Mehaboob filed a complaint against the police officer with the Bangalore city division Lokayukta police, after a which a trap was laid and the accused was caught red handed.

On completion of investigation, chargesheet was filed before the Special Judge who convicted the accused.
