"The officer has been identified as Bhaskar Satre, who is attached to the Taloja jail. We have launched a manhunt to nab the accused," said a police officer.
The incident took place around 6 pm near the Rapid Action Force camp in Taloja, they said.
"Satre was going towards Taloja along with his friend Anwar Sheikh in his (Satre's) car at the time of the incident," an officer said.
Satre sustained a bullet injury in his stomach and is being operated upon, police said adding that they were in the process of recording Sheikh's statement.
Police have not ruled out the possibility of the attackers being former Taloja jail inmates, who wanted to settle a score with Satre.
