A police official accused of kidnapping a person for ransom was found hanging in his father -in-law's home in Belagavi district even as CID began a probe into the alleged abduction case.

The body of DySP of Chikkamagaluru sub-division Kallappa Handibag (35) was yesterday found hanging from the ceiling of the house at Murgod, police said.

A person named Tejas Gowda in a complaint had accused the officer of being involved in his abduction for ransom. The DySP had been absconding since.

Gowda had alleged he was abducted by a gang on June 28 and released only after Rs 10 lakh were paid to the officer.

He had also claimed he had the recordings of the telephonic conversation about handing over the money to the officer.

According to police, CID officials have visited the station where Handibag was posted and quarters where he was residing in Chikkamagaluru. They will also be questioning Gowda.

Officials said CID is also likely to visit Murgod where Handibag was found dead, and will be looking into allegations of "harassment" by senior officials.

Handibag's final rites were performed late last night at his native place Hulgund in Raibaga Taluk. His family has alleged he was harassed by senior officials.
