Michael Fernandes, who is wanted in crime cases in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Goa, was in a judicial lock up after being arrested for allegedly mugging a couple in neighbouring Porvorim locality.

After escaping from Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour (IPHB), he had allegedly robbed a couple with the help of his accomplice.

Police escorts, who had gone to take Michael to court for hearing on further remand yesterday, found him unconscious.

The initial suspicion are that he might have tried to take his life by consuming tablets or may have faked it to plan his escape.

Silva said that Michael was initially rushed to Mapusa Hospital from where he was shifted to GMC, where he is currently undergoing treatment.Police are now questioning his cell inmates to verify the origin of the tablets.

Several police jeeps are stationed outside the hospital where he has been admitted.

Police are wary because Michael has a history of slipping out from hospitals where he is brought for regular check-up or treatment after he claims to have fallen sick.

"We have kept abundant security because this could be his ploy to escape," Deputy Superintendent of Police Bousset Silva told reporters.

"We want to know how the tablets reached Michael," the officer said.
