Police were called to the home of 'Kick-Ass' actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson after a machine gun was spotted inside the property.

A passer-by caught sight of an M16 rifle on a desk in the Primrose Hill house that the 24-year-old actor shares with his filmmaker wife Sam Taylor-Johnson, and notified the authorities, reported Telegraph online.

When officers inspected the weapon, they found it was in fact a deactivated model that the 'Fifty Shades of Grey' director had been given as part of an art project.

"We can confirm that early this morning police were called to the London home of Mr and Mrs Taylor-Johnson following a report of a firearm on the premises by a concerned passer-by," said a spokesperson for the couple.

"The family were not present in the property at the time but the police gained entry via a key holder.

"The firearm was located in Sam Taylor-Johnson's basement studio and has been confirmed as a certified and fully decommissioned M16 assault rifle that was provided to Mrs Taylor-Johnson by the international charity Peace One Day as part of an art project entitled 'Peace One Day M16',.

Peace One Day has also confirmed that the deactivated gun is due to be placed up for auction at Bonhams in October.

Sam Taylor-Johnson took part in a previous Peace One Day project involving AK47s in 2012.

Her remodelled assault rifle raised 10,000 pounds for the charity at auction.
