As part of its crime prevention measures, the Chennai City Police has directed house owners again in the city limits to provide details about their tenants to the jurisdictional police stations.

"The landlords, house owners are directed to furnish the details of their tenants to the Station House Officers [inspectors] of their jurisdiction," a press release from the office of the Commissioner of Police said here.

The directive has been given in accordance with the provisions of the Criminal Procedure Code and a Government Order, the release added.

Last year, the Chennai Police, as part of its measures to "prevent crimes and solve crimes if it happens," directed landlords to provide information on their tenants to the local police stations to build a database.

The move came after some crimes allegedly involving migrant workers. In some cases, it was found that the landlords had no information about their tenants which made probe difficult.

When it was introduced, the plan drew criticism from some quarters. The police, however, maintained that it was only an effort to have a database to bolster the security apparatus.
