Puducherry Lt Governor Kiran Bedi today urged police in the Union Territory to win the collective appreciation of the peopleand"measure up to their expectations."
At a meeting of the Beat Police officers at the Police Training School to review the working of the officers, the former IPS officer underlined the need for the police to win "collective appreciation" of the Union Territory's people.
A release from Raj Nivas said the Lt Governor also listed the duties the beat police officers should discharge to prevent crimes and also to create a sense of security among the people.
Bedi brought to the officers' attention a list of 12 points urging them, among other things, to hold interactions with respectable persons in their areas, teachers, students and volunteers to create a network of support system.
She also said women police constables should be included in the Beat system and link them for active policing.
The women police constables should go to the fields and should not remain in the police stations relegating them to passive policing, the release said.
Bedi presented a certificate of appreciation to Permmadi Kesava Rao, a police constable and Beat officerfrom Yanam region, for his brave deed in rescuing a man from drowning in the Godavari river recently.
Director General of Police S K Gautam and Senior Superintendent of Police V J Chandran were among those present.
