Police today used teargas to disperse a group of SDPI activists when they marched to the secretariat here protesting alleged attacks on its workers by ruling CPIM cadres.

Police fired teargas shells when the SDPI activists tried to break the police cordon late this evening, police said.

The march was taken out to protest against the alleged attack on the SDPI 'Campaign Jatha' by CPI-M workers at Chavara at nearby Kollam district earlier in the day.

CPI-M denied the charge and said that it was the SDPI activists who attacked their cadres at Chavara.

The Marxist party has called a hartal in Chavara assembly constituency tomorrow in protest against the attack.

Meanwhile, SDPI has also called a 12-hour hartal in Kollam district to protest the alleged attack by CPI-M workers.
