Thane city police today resorted to mild lathi charge to quell a mob of Congress workers, when they tried to enter the District Collectorate here today as part of their agitation against the government.

The protest rally was led by MLA Naseem Khan & MLC Sanjay Dutt to draw government's attention on a host of issues like farmers' suicides, Vyapam scam, corruption, etc.

Hundreds of Congress workers participated in the protest. When the rally reached the Collectorate, the workers tried to enter the premises. But the posse of policemen stopped them from entering and resorted to mild lathi charge.

Senior Police Inspector Dilip Boraste of Thane Nagar police station confirmed that they used "mild force" to disperse the mob.

Congress leader Sanjay Dutt condemned the police action, terming it as "inhuman and barbaric".

He said the issue would be raised in the upcoming monsoon session of the state legislature beginning next week.

"The government is trying to throttle the voice of the people by adopting such undemocratic tactics," he said.
