Timely action by a policeman today averted a tragedy when he risked his life to douse a fire in a school in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

Special Police Officer Tawseef Ahmad, posted at Janglat Mandi, showed exemplary courage by putting off a fire which had broken out in the Government Middle School building at Doonipawa village, 55 kms from here, a police spokesman said.

The fire had broken out due to the leakage of LPG gas in the kitchen of the school building, he said.

"The cop entered the room which was in flames and without caring for his life controlled the fire by throwing the burning gas cylinder out of the window," the spokesman said.

However, the policeman received burn injuries in the process and has been admitted in District Hospital Anantnag for treatment, the spokesman said.
