A 50-year-old police officer, knocked down by two-wheeler riders while on duty on Sunday, has died during the treatment.

Assistant sub-inspector Suresh Chapate, attached to Bhosari MIDC police station, died at a city hospital on Wednesday night, police said today.

"On Sunday night, three youths on bike were asked by the traffic police to stop, however they did not stop. When Chapate tried to stop them they knocked him down. All three ran away leaving the bike behind," said inspector Bhimrao Shingade of MIDC police station.

Chapate had suffered multiple injuries, he said.

"We have registered a case against the unidentified bike riders," he said.

Police also found that the chassis number of the bike was scratched out, and its registration number was fake. "It seems the riders had stolen the bike and they were probably using it for chain snatching," said inspector Shingade.
