Policemen held hostage by villagers

Angry villagers kept a police team hostage for hours at a village in Bihar's Araria district and set it free only after one person, arrested on the charge of motorcycle theft, was released.

The incident happened at Kargil village in Araria district late last night.

The villagers, angry over the arrest of Mohammad Illiyas, took a police party hostage and demanded release of Illiyas, Superintendent of Police Sudhir Kumar Porika said today.

The policemen were also roughed up, he said.

They refused to release the policemen even after intervention of Sub Divisional Police Officer Ajit Singh.

The policemen, including officer in-charge Mukesh Kumar Sah, were set free only after the arrested youth was released.
 

The SP said that an FIR had been registered against Illiyas and dozen of villagers in the case.
