Two policemen were injured today in a clash with members of a local truck owners association when they went to remove a blockade, put up by the truck owners, on the National Highway 41 at Bhawanipur in East Midnapore district.

ASI Naba Kumar Koley and constable Shanti Ranjan Dey of Bhawanipore police station were injured in stone pelting by members of the Truck Lorry Owners Association when a police team tried to remove the blockade on NH 41, district Superintendent of Police Alok Rajoria told PTI.

"This morning complaints were received that the association members have snatched papers from a couple of truck drivers who were passing by the area," Rajoria said.

The association had put up a dais and were demonstrating demanding extra payment from companies for overloading trucks in the area, officer-in-charge, Bhawanipore police station, Raja Mukherjee said.

"This (demonstration) has been going on for almost a month. But they had no permission from the SDO to put up a dais and mike-usage," he said.

Thirteen members of the association were arrested, he said adding the dais was dismantled and the highway cleared.
