The committee members were removed after charges that they were often visiting political prisoners in jail and influencing officials to get parole for many of them.

Former CPI-M district secretary P Sasi, who was expelled from the party last year, and Janata Dal-S leader Thomas Nellikunnel were the other leaders removed from the advisory panel.

Kerala Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan had recently visited Kannur Prison, where he found posters of Communist leaders and graffiti in a block where CPI-M prisoners were lodged.

There were also allegations that CPI-M prisoners were getting paroles easily on the recommendations of the advisory panel.

The panel was constituted during the tenure of the previous LDF government.
