Polling party attacked, police jeep set afire in UP

A police driver was injured when a polling party was attacked and a jeep set on fire by a mob during an attempt to loot ballot boxes after polling for village head in Nanpara area, police said today.

The incident occurred last evening in Chandelakalan village when the polling party was taking back ballot boxes, they said.

The mob pelted stones on police and torched the jeep, they said, adding, the police driver had received minor injuries in the incident.

An FIR has been lodged against 40 named and 110 unidentified persons, of which 19 have been arrested, they said.

29 people have been arrested in connection with the

attack, a senior police officer said late tonight.

The officer said the arrested persons included the former Vice-Chairman of Ausgram Municipalty and present Trinamool Congress councillor.

The situation was under control as further raids were on, he added.
