Chief Minister of Puducherry V Narayanasamy distributed sweets to Congress workers who burst fire-crackers here on Thursday to celebrate the victory of the ruling Congress nomineeA John Kumar in the October 21 byelection to Kamaraj Nagar assembly seat.
The party retained the seat by defeating the opposition AINRC nominee S Bhuvaneswarane by a margin of 7,170 votes in the bypoll.
Congress led the secular democratic alliance in which the DMK, the Left parties, VCK and a few others are the constituents.
Narayanasamy led the campaign for over a month in the segment, meeting voters in the constituency which fell vacant after the incumbent legislator V Vaithilingam quit the MLA post following his election to Lok Sabha from lone seat here in the April elections.
The victory of John Kumar had restored the strength of the Congress to 15 in the House and with the support of the three-member DMK from outside, the Congress has strengthened its stability in the House having 30 elected and three nominated legislators.
