Nagas are second to none in football but due to lack of proper infrastructure, the boys and girls here are unable to perform to the best of their abilities, said the state's Youth Resources and Sports (YRS) department director, Linda Solo.
The YRS director was addressing the inaugural function of the 23rd edition of Classic Cup, a prestigious football tournament in the state, on Local Ground here.
"The department has two hostels, one each in Kohima and Dimapur, with quite a few students, but due to lack of proper infrastructure, our boys and girls are unable to perform to the best of their abilities," she said.

"Some of our talented youth are playing for clubs of other states in the Indian Super League, and we are proud of them. It is a shame that Nagaland doesn't offer similar opportunities to our players," she said.
Nonetheless, she asked the players not to lose heart as the sport was gaining momentum in the state.
"The tournament is organised every year to promote young and talented footballers and foster a team spirit among them," said Classic Club president K Neibou Sekhose.
