Indigent people are abandoning their ailing parents at the Government Rajaji Hospital hoping that the hospital staff would take care of them, police said.

Yesterday a 55-year-old ailing man was found dead near the maternity ward. He had been brought to the Hospital and abandoned there by his relatives, police at the GRH police outpost here said.

Police said children of parents, who did not get sufficient income to attend to their parents, leave them at the Hospital, hoping they would be taken care of by the Hospital staff.

The number of old people dying as orphans, neglected by their children are on the increase, claimed an official of the GRH.

Police said they had drawn up various plans to take care of old people living alone in their houses by following certain guidelines. However, they could not do anything if people from neighbouring towns were brought and deserted here.

BJP local functionary Murali stressed the need for having a strong centre to take care of ailing old people when they are deserted by their children.
