Three contract workers suffered bruises when a portion of a false ceiling at the recently inaugurated domestic terminal at the airport here fell down following heavy rains early this morning.

Airport sources said the incident occurred around 4 am in the area leading to one of the aerobridges in the terminal, inaugurated last month.

Three loaders who were passing by the area suffered bruises. However, there were no passengers in the area since no flight was scheduled at the time of the incident, they said.

Several parts of the city, especially the suburbs including the airport area, received heavy rains since the wee hours under the influence of cyclonic storm 'MAHASEN' which lay about 850 km southeast of Chennai in the Bay of Bengal.

A Chandigarh-bound Jet Airways flight was cancelled owing to intermittent weather, airport officials said.

The summer rains have brought respite to people from the sweltering heat.
