The post-mortem report of the Dalit woman found murdered last week in nearby Perumbavoor has confirmed that she was subjected to brutal torture and rape, police sources said today.

"There were 38 wounds on her body. The report has also indicated rape," they said, without elaborating further on the postmortem report prepared by the Forensic Department of Alappuzha Medical College.

Police was also planning to send her internal organs for further scientific examination.

Police had earlier said the woman, a law student who hailed from a poor family, was subjected to rape and brutal assault using sharp edged weapons before being murdered at her small wayside house in Perumbavoor on April 28.

No formal arrest has been made so far in the crime that shocked the state, triggering protests and intense politicking ahead of the May 16 Assembly elections.

Ernakulam Range IG Mahipal Yadav had said there were signs of strangulation, smothering and 13 injuries on the woman's neck, chest and at several other places of the body.

Some reports had said there were around 20 injuries and that the victim's intestines were spilled out.
