A Post Office employee has been booked for embezzlement of public money to the tune of Rs 29.5 lakh at Narot Mehra here, police said.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rakesh Kaushal revealed here today that accused Bal Krishan was working as in-charge of the Gram Dak Sewak branch since 1990.

Residents of the area had invested money in various schemes of the Post Office, but instead of depositing the amount as instructed by them, the accused colluded to perpetrate the fraud, police said.

Krishan used to issue bogus receipts and deposit documents to the victims, they said.

A case under various sections of the IPC, including cheating, has been registered at the instance of Superintendent of Post Office Gurdaspur.

SSP added that the accused is absconding and a team has been formed to nab Krishan.
