Posterity won't forgive for failing to create jobs: Gangwar

Labour Minister Santosh Gangwar said today that the coming generations "will not forgive us" for failing to take steps to create jobs.

He said India has the highest population of the young in the world and every youth want jobs.

"Coming generations will not forgive us if urgent steps are not taken in the direction of employment generation," Gangwar said.

He was addressing experts in a brain storming session on employment generation strategies, organised by VV Giri National Labour Institute (VVGNLI) in Noida.

According to an official statement, he said that his ministry does not directly create employment but creates suitable environment for employers and employees.
 

The government is moving in the right direction on skills development and employment generation.

Gangwar also referred to demonetisation, which was announced on November 8, 2016, saying that it has yielded lot of good results during the last one year.

Gangwar released four publications of VVGNLI and inaugurated the renovated seminar block of the institute.

Labour secretary M Sathiyavathy said that 10 million youngsters are added every year in the race to search for a job.

"Unfortunately, many youngsters are lacking skill to get a job in the market. The government is constantly trying to fill up this gap," she said.

"About 1.17 crore youth have been trained in various skills in recent past and 920 job fairs were organised to get these youths placed in industries and institutions," she added.

Referring to the important legislation of 26 weeks of maternity leave to pregnant lady workers, she said that many employers are not willing to give this paid leave of 26 weeks.

The experts should suggest remedies regarding this issue, she added.
