Posters expressing condolence to the rogue elephant, which died in captivity at a camp in Anamalai Tiger Reserve (ATR), have appeared in and around Madukkarai in the district today.
The wild tusker 'Maharaj', trapped by the Forest department in Coimbatore on Sunday, breathed its last last night.
The elephant had killed three persons and caused heavy damages to crops in Madukarai forest range, was captured after being tranquilised. As the elephant started resisting, another dose was shot before it was taken to ATR.
The posters, featuring image of the elephant with tears rolling, read "Kattayan alias Madukkarai Maharaj, we thought you will leave the forest. But, you have left this world."
Meanwhile, several wildlife enthusiasts have raised concern over the way in which the elephant was treated by the forest department.
Some of them even sought action against the veterinarians for mishandling the animal, leading to its death.
Overdose of tranquiliser was suspected to be the reason for the death.
