Five museums under the Culture Ministry, including the National Museum, are headless due to "non-availability of suitable candidates" and "litigation", Lok Sabha was informed today.

Besides National Museum, post of directors are lying vacant in National Gallery of Modern Art at Mumbai and Bengaluru, Indian Museum (Kolkata) and Salarjung Museum (Hyderabad), Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma said in a written reply.

"The posts are lying vacant mainly because of non-availability of suitable candidates and litigation," he said.

The selection process "in conjunction with Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT)" is already "underway" for the existing vacancies, the minister said.

Sharma noted that generation of vacancies and filling up the same is a "continuous process".
