A farmer died today after consuming pesticide for allegedly not getting adequate price for his potato crop in the Galsi area of the district.

Ganesh Soren (25) used to work as a share cropper and had cultivated potato in his field expecting a good return, his wife Mungli Soren said.

This year the yield was very high, but the returns had nose dived, Mungli, who also works as a farm hand, said.

On Monday last, she had left their residence in Jamdanga area in Mohanpur village in Galsi and when she returned, she saw her husband vomiting and rushed him to Burdwan Medical College and Hospital where he died today.

Mungli claimed that her husband had consumed pesticide as he could not repay the loans he taken.

Galsi BDO Dhrubapada Shandilya, however, rubbished Mungli's claims and said Ganesh had cultivated only on a small patch of land and had tried to commit suicide due to a family feud.
