The Andhra Pradesh Government has approved a proposal to install energy-efficient equipment at seven important temples in the State at a cost of Rs 6.45 crore.

The proposal was put forward by the State Energy Conservation Mission (SESM).

In a press release, Chief Executive Officer of SECM A Chandrasekhara Reddy, said these seven temples - located in Srisailam, Vijayawada, Srikalahasti, Dwaraka Tirumala, Kanipakam, Simhachalam and Annavaram - would be provided with LED bulbs and fans.

Solar-powered LED street lights and water heaters will also be installed by replacing existing electrical equipment at the shrines, he said.

Solar energy will replace LPG installations at all 'annadana' (kitchens) choultries.

The entire project will cost Rs 6.45 crore and result in saving of Rs 4.15 crore per year, Reddy said, adding this is the first such programme in the country.
