Expressing concern over the "grim" power situation in the Valley, the Jammu and Kashmir CPI(M) today asked the government to arrange alternate sources of energy to provide regular electricity to people across the state.

"The power position in the Valley continues to be grim and far from satisfactory. No power schedule is being followed and even metered areas are facing long and unscheduled power cuts much to the chagrin of public," CPI-M state secretary M Y Tarigami said in a statement here.

The same situation is being repeated during every winter soon after the civil secretariat moves to winter capital Jammu from summer capital Srinagar, he said.

"And the people of the Valley are left helpless being devoid of basic amenities, especially power and essential commodities," Tarigami said.

"It seems the administration is hell-bent to keep people into sustained darkness," he said and suggested a policy to overcome the crisis.

"The only solution to overcome the power crisis is a sustainable and well-conceived energy policy and encouraging establishment of mini and micro-hydel projects under the state sector and public-private partnership," the CPI(M) leader said.

In order to meet the challenges of winter vagaries, he said higher-ups in the administration need to ensure a better coordination among different departments especially those providing essential services.

"Though an early weather warning system is in place, in the absence of the required resource mobilisation weather alerts do not serve any purpose," Tarigami said.
