Power snaps after transformers catch fire in Ghaziabad

Power supply was disrupted at several places in Murad Nagar area here after a fire broke out in two transformers near Kela Mandi, officials said today.

Two transformers of Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) caught fire last night and the flames engulfed neighbouring houses, Fire Station Officer (FSO) of Modi Nagar station, Kuldeep Kumar said.

One fire tender stationed at 'Urs Mela' was rushed to the spot and it took an hour to douse the blazing transformers, he said.

The irate locals informed that no officer of UPPCL took stock of the situation till late morning and the electricity supply was yet to resume.
 

Meanwhile, seven women, including four minors, fell unconscious due to suffocation because of smoke emanating out of the transformers installed near their houses, the FSO said.

Efforts are on to ascertain the cause of the fire, he added.
