The IED, kept in a plastic box, was found near a culvert in Harijhar Path in Goreswar town of the district by the public who alerted patrolling army personnel in the area.
The security forces cordoned off the area and a bomb disposal squad had rushed to the spot to defuse the IED, the sources added.
