The powerloom job working unit owners today withdrew their 18-day old strike seeking rollback of the 15 per cent power tariff hike effected by the state government from last month or subsidy for them.

The decision to withdraw the strike was taken at an executive meeting of powerloom owners association. Accordingly, the units will be re-opened and commence production on January 28, association sources said.

Nearly 1.4 lakh powerlooms in Coimbatore and Tirupur district fell silent during the strike.

The workers were also on a "hunger strike" from January 22 but called it off yesterday after State Municipal Administration Minister S P Velumani assured them that a solution could be found after the by-poll for Srirangam assembly constituency, they said.
