Amid talks of a leadership change in Punjab, PCC chief Pratap Singh Bajwa who is battling opposition from state leaders today met Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her deputy Rahul Gandhi.
Bajwa discussed the "restructuring plan" of Congress high command with Sonia and Rahul ahead of its possible announcement soon.
Bajwa is being opposed by former chief minister Amarinder Singh, who has been seeking his removal as Punjab Congress chief and replacement for quite some time now. Bajwa had replaced Amarinder after the latter failed the party at the hustings in the last Assembly polls.
The Congress has lost twice to ruling Akali Dal-BJP combine in the state and is now trying to put its house in order to put up a united fight against the ruling alliance in the state and oust it.
Sources indicated that the restructuring plan would be announced soon, as Sonia and Rahul have already met all senior leaders from the state and held lengthy deliberations on restructuring the party.
Amarinder has held two lengthy meetings with Sonia and Rahul and is learnt to have discussed the plan for revival of Congress with them.
He has also suggested the name of his confidante Sunil Jakhar, but the name of senior Congress leader Ambika Soni is also doing the rounds.
The Congress top brass has initiated efforts to put its house in order in the factionalism-ridden state unit, with Sonia and Rahul separately meeting senior leaders from the state.
Amarinder met Sonia yesterday and had met her along with Rahul together on August 20. Bajwa and state leader Rajinder Kaur Bhattal had also separately met Rahul and Sonia.
The Punjab Congress has been a divided lot ever since it lost two successive elections in the state and Amarinder was replaced by Bajwa as the party chief.
With the state set to go to polls in early 2017, the demand for replacing Bajwa has grown louder and the party leadership is grappling with the issue for almost a year now.
