A prayer meet was held at the ancestral village of "Nirbhaya" on Monday to observe the day she was brutally gangraped in 2012 in New Delhi.
The "pushpanjali" programme is held in the village every year on December 16, the day the 23-year-old physiotherapy intern was raped by six men. She had succumbed to injuries a fortnight later in a Singapore hospital.
A number of villagers gathered for the programme on Monday and paid tributes to her.
Speaking to reporters, her grandfather said, "Had the accused been hanged on this day (December 16), it would have sent a strong message to those indulging in such acts. Now there should be no delay and the convicts should be hanged."
"There should be a provision that rapists be hanged at the earliest," he said.
Six men had assaulted "Nirbhaya" and her male friend in a moving bus as it drove through the streets of the national capital.
She was thrown out of the bus -- so grievously injured that her insides were spilling out -- along with her friend near the airport.
