Preparatory events for Oly-bound shuttlers, wrestlers approved

The committee met under the chairmanship of secretary (Sports) on May 18 and approved the coaching camps and preparatory tournaments for Olympic qualifiers and their sparring partners on the basis of proposals submitted by the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and Badminton Federation of India (BAI).

A 14-member Indian team, including the Olympic-bound shuttlers, will participate in the Thai Open Grand Prix Gold, Indonesian Open Super Series and Singapore Open Super Series next month, the sports ministry said in a statement today.

The first of the three preparatory tournaments -- Thai Open -- will be held from June 5 to 10 at Bangkok, the second will be organised in Jakarta from June 12 to 17 while the final tournament will be staged in Singapore from June 19 to 24.

 

During the meeting, it was also decided to reassess the requirement of sports equipments and procurement be made according to latest guidelines.

As far as wrestling is concerned, the national coaching camp for London-bound male grapplers will be held in STC, Sonepat from May 28 to June 15, while the 19-day national camp for five women grapplers along with two coaches, one physio and a masseur will be held in NIS Patiala.

A special training camp with foreign teams for both men and women wrestlers will be held in Belarus/USA from June 15 to July 30.

Further, it was also decided that the wrestlers will proceed to London directly after their special training-cum-competition from USA or Belarus.
