A probe panel set up by the West Bengal Human Rights Commission to inquire into the vandalism at Presidency University in April today accused police and administration of non-cooperation.
"We had asked the Officer-in-charge of Jorasanko Police station and three constables to appear before the inquiry commission, but they did not do so," Professsor Amal Mukhopadhaya, who heads the inquiry committee, told PTI.
"I then called up the home secretary and city police commissioner, but both of them refused any help. Then when the WBHRC issued an order the police complied," Mukhopadhaya said.
"The police did not cooperate with the inquiry commission initially. It was after the WBHRC issued an order that the police cooperated. If they had cooperated earlier then I could have submitted my report earlier," he added.
After the April 10 attack at the Presidency campus, the WBHRC had formed a fact finding committee under Professor Mukhopadhaya the next day to investigate the matter.
Flag-bearing supporters of the Trinamool's students' wing had allegedly barged into the university and ransacked and vandalised the Baker Laboratory of the Physics Department on the day.
