This is his first visit outside Delhi, after assuming office of the President.
Mukherjee, who was received by Tamil Nadu Governor K Rosaiah, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa and some of her ministerial colleagues, was given a guard of honour at the airport.
The President, who will be felicitated by the Madras Chamber of Commerce, will leave for Tirupati later in the day.
