President Pranab Mukherjee today gifted mobile phones to freedom fighters as he hosted an 'At Home' reception for them on the occasion of the 72nd anniversary of the Quit India movement here.

During the event held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the President said he gifted the gadget because it has become a symbol of the country's "rapid progress on the digital pathway."

Each of the freedom fighters was gifted a mobile phone with a personal message from the President, a Rashtrapati Bhavan spokesperson said.

In his message, the President said "the mobile phone has become a symbol of India's rapid progress on the digital pathway. It connects us to our near and dear ones and to every corner of the world.

"I hope this small gift will bring you joy as you keep in touch with family and friends through many happy conversations in the coming days. I wish you the very best of health and a long life."

The event was also attended by Vice President Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh among others.
