A day after his wife passed away, President Pranab Mukherjee was back at work today.

Shortly after he returned from the crematorium after attending the last rites for Suvra, his wife of 58 years, who died after a period of illness, he attended to matters of state in his office at the Rashtrapati Bhawan.

Mukherjee got a briefing from External Affairs Ministry officials about the Summit of Forum of India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) to be held in Jaipur on Friday.

He will be meeting the heads of state and government who will be here to participate in the summit. They will be accorded a ceremonial welcome tomorrow at the Rashtrapati Bhawan before the delegation calls on the President.

Earlier today, he offered floral tributes to former President Shanker Dayal Sharma on his birth anniversary at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Vimla Sharma, wife of the late President, other members of his family were among those who attended the event.

Mukherjee also conveyed sincere gratitude on behalf of his family and himself for the condolences and words of support extended over his bereavement.

He conveyed that the empathy and solace offered at this time of grief have given his family and him the strength and fortitude to bear this irreparable loss, the spokesman said.

Suvra (74), a Rabindra Sangeet exponent, passed away at the Army Research and Referral hospital here yesterday morning.
