Press Trust of India Hyderabad
Press Council of India (PCI) Chairman Justice Markandey Katju today announced constitution of a committee to look into the problems being faced by small and medium newspapers in the country.

PCI member and All-India Small and Medium Newspapers Federation president Gurinder Singh will be convenor of the committee. The panel will study problems being faced by small and medium newspapers and give its suggestions.

Katju asked Singh to nominate other members to the committee from the media and outside and come up with necessary recommendations.

"I will take up the issue with the Government of India and state governments once you submit your recommendations," Katju said at a seminar organised by the Federation's Andhra Pradesh unit here.

Earlier, Singh requested the PCI chief to take up the cause of small and medium newspapers with the government and help them come out of crisis.

"We are not even getting loans from banks and as such are finding it difficult to run the newspapers. There should be a fund for the development of small and medium newspapers so that we can secure loans," he said.

Responding instantly to the plea, Katju announced constitution of the committee under Singh.
