Press Trust of India Srinagar
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister's Grievance Cell Coordinator Tassaduq Mufti asked officials concerned today to ensure burning of leaves and twigs which causes severe winter air pollution is stopped immediately.

The burning of abscised leaves, willow and popular twigs (biomass) releases large amounts of airborne particulates which include fine bits of dust, soot, harmful particles and toxic gases aggravating air pollution.

"The moisture in these leaves makes them burn slowly causing emission of smoke which is hazardous for both health and environment," Mufti, brother of Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, said.

He urged the educational institutions, Srinagar Municipality Corporation (SMC) and Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) to immediately put a stop on the practice of burning of abscised leaves, willow and poplar twigs.

Mufti said the leaves' smoke also irritates the eyes, nose and throat of small children and adults, particularly the elderly and people with asthma, emphysema, lung or heart disease.

"The incessant burning of leaves also leads to the formation of smog which affects the general visibility.

Similarly, the production of carbon dioxide also contributes to global warming," he said.

Biomass waste burning is banned under relevant Environmental Acts.

"As it is harmful and illegal; and needs to be stopped immediately," he added.

Calling for alternative use of fallen leaves, Mufti said composting leaves is the most eco-friendly option which is an excellent fertilizer and can improve agriculture fields and gardens and can also be used to fill low land areas.
