Preventive measures ahead of LS poll in Bengal

In a statewide drive ahead of the Lok Sabha poll, the authorities have seized 944 illegal arms and 2,410 cartridges, Chief Electoral Officer Sunil Gupta said here today.

"The law and order situation was reviewed today in a meeting with senior state police officials including the IGP (Law and Order) Anuj Sharma," the CEO said.

Gupta said the list of seizures also included 96 kg of explosive materials and 4,885 bombs. Two arms manufacturing units had also been sealed.

Altogether 24,402 licensed arms have so far been surrendered by the owners.

Gupta also said 67,784 persons have been detained as part of preventive measures.
 

Apart from this 43,143 Non-Bailable Warrants were executed so far with 27,519 NBW cases pending.

Altogether 12,708 vulnerable hamlets have been identified by the administration acting on guidelines by the Election Commission.

Stating that there was no case of poll death so far, the CEO said that 302 persons have so far been injured in 305 incidents.

With a seizure of Rs 24.58 lakh at Tarakeswar by the Income Tax department sleuths, the total seizure by the IT rose to Rs 2.88 crore, Gupta said.

After a discussion with the Telecommunications Department, the Commission has finalised setting up of 10 sattelite phones at 10 different 'Shadow Zones', where communication is very poor in three Jangalmahal districts, Gupta said.
