Stating the Indian economy is passing through "testing times", the President said slowdown has affected many sectors.

"The government needs to provide enabling policy support which promote sustainable growth to these two (handloom and handicraft) important sectors of our economy," he said after giving away the Shilp Guru and Sant Kabir Awards for the year 2009 and 2010 here.

"To fully harness the inherent potential of the artisans and weavers, there is a need to constantly endeavour to get them access to markets within India and abroad," Mukherjee said.

However, he said, competition from powerloom and mills sector, availability of cheaper imported fabrics, changing consumer preferences and alternative employment opportunities, threaten the vibrancy of handloom sector.

"There is a need to be aware of the emerging challenges and also the opportunities presented by the changing global environment," the President said.

He called for adoption of a focused approach maximising the opportunities and strengths inherent in the situation.

"We have to adapt to the changes that are taking place not only within the country but also globally," he said.

Mukherjee called for modernisation in the weaving technique, improvement of designs and pattern, technology and upgradation of skills to ensure quality.

There is also need to ensure supply of good quality basic inputs like yarn, dyes and chemicals in time to create a sound marketing infrastructure as this would not only give the required impetus but also make the products of weavers and craft persons more competitive, he added.
