President Pranab Mukherjee today congratulated child rights activist Kailash Satyarthi on winning the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to abolish child labour in the country.

"The prize should be seen as recognition of the contributions of India's vibrant civil society in addressing complex social problems such as child labour and the important role played by them in collaboration with the government in the nation's efforts to eliminate all forms of child labour in the country," the President said.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh also congratulated Satyarthi on winning the Nobel Peace Prize.

"Satyarthi is a champion of child rights whose work is now recognised internationally," he said.

Singh also congratulated Pakistani teenager Malala Yousufzai on sharing the Nobel Peace Prize honour with Satyarthi. He said Yousufzai's spirited fight for education to girls in Pakistan has inspired many in South Asia.
