Delhi’s legislative Assembly has been dissolved, paving the way for fresh elections.

A notification issued by the Union home ministry said President Pranab Mukherjee had dissolved the Assembly on Tuesday.

The Union Cabinet had that day recommended the dissolution following the suggestion of  Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung after talks on Monday with the Bharatiya Janata Party, Congress and Aam Aadmi Party, all of which expressed the inability to form government and sought fresh mandate.

While the fresh elections may be held early next year, the process for the November 25 by-elections to three constituencies, for which last date of nominations is today, was revoked by the Election Commission today.
