It was a Diwali message with difference this time from President Pranab Mukherjee, who greeted people on the eve of the festival and urged them to celebrate "in a pollution free manner".

In his message to the people, the President said the festival represents the victory of light over darkness and good over evil.

"May the festival serve as a catalyst for greater unity within our country. Let us on this occasion join forces, share happiness, help the needy and engage in collective efforts to lead our nation to greater and greater glory.

"May the festival bring joy and prosperity to all sections of our people across the length and breadth of the country. I urge all Indians to celebrate Diwali in a pollution free manner," he said.

The message from the President comes at a time when concern is being raised over air pollution in the national capital.
