President Ram Nath Kovind will visit Allahabad on Saturday, December 16, to lay the foundation stone of 'Nyay Gram', a model township of the High Court here.

"On the request of the high court, the state government has provided 34.82 acres of land at Devghat, Jhalwa here for construction of a judicial academy, an auditorium with a seating capacity of 1,500-2,000 people and residences for hon'ble judges and staff," Justice Tarun Agarwala the high court told reporters here.

The president will lay the foundation stone of Nyay Gram in a pandal erected at the high court ground, he said. Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath would be present on the occasion.

"At its inception, the strength of judges at the Allahabad High Court was six which has risen to 108 now. When the high court was shifted to its present location in 1916, it had just six courtrooms which has now grown to 64 in number in addition to the court of the chief justice.

"However, despite being the biggest high court of the country, there is no place where all the judges can assemble and deliberate on issues," Justice Agarwala said.

There are around 3,000 judicial officers in the state who not only need to be well-trained but also updated with the contemporary legislation and developments in the field of law for which periodic training is a must, he added.

The state government has nominated the Public Works Department, Uttar Pradesh, as the construction agency for the project and Rs 395.10 crore have been sanctioned, of which Rs 62 crore have been released as the first instalment.

In the second phase, the plan is for construction of 33 bungalows for the judges and 66 flats for staff.
