Prez pays obeisance to sage Lahiri in Banka

President Pranab Mukherjee today paid obeisance to sage Guru Shyama Charan Lahiri at Gurudham in Bounsi village.

"My parents were disciple of Bhupendra Nath Sanyal, a direct disciple of Lahiri Mahasaya. They used to come here. Many of the disciples participated in Quit India movement," the President said while addressing a small gathering.

The President also interacted with the disciples of the saint there.

Lahiri Mahasaya is widely known in the West through 'Autobiography of a Yogi' a widely acclaimed book by Paramahansa Yogananda, a disciple of Yukteswar Giri who was a follower of Lahiri.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on March 7, had unveiled a special postage stamp on he Yogoda Satsanga Society, founded by Paramahansa Yogananda in 1917, which also teaches Kriya Yoga by Lahiri Mahasaya.
 

Lahiri Mahasaya, a disciple of Mahavatar Babaji, is said to have revived the yogic science of Kriya Yoga.

The PM has said the 'Kriya Yoga' revitalises the subtle currents of life energy in the body.
