Prez to inaugurate 'Krishi Vasant' agri exhibition tomorrow

President Pranab Mukherjee will tomorrow inaugurate the national agriculture exhibition, 'Krishi Vasant, 2014', here.

Maharashtra Governor K Sankaranarayanan, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar will also be attending the function which is to be held at the Central Institute for Cotton Research (CICR) complex.

Chavan will deliver the keynote address on the occasion.

Termed the biggest agricultural fair in the country, the five-day exhibition is being held to commemorate the birth centenary of former CM, the late Vasantrao Naik. The event is likely to attract about 1 lakh farmers from across India.

"The exhibition will also reach out to about 50 lakh farmers across the country through live webcasts at district informatics centres through NIC," Maharashtra Agriculture Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil told reporters.
 

Farmers can also participate in the seminars through live video-conferencing, he added.

"We have successfully conducted the trials for webcasting and video conferencing facilities", he said.

The exhibition is jointly organised by the Union Agriculture Ministry and the state government in association with the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) as the strategic partner.

There will be events related to crops, particularly cereals, fibres, fodder, oilseeds, vegetables, pulses and medicinal and aromatic plants, as part of the exhibition, organisers said.

Organisers said 10 trains have been booked specially for ferrying farmers to Nagpur while as many as 1,973 private and state transport buses and 2,269 private vehicles will also be pressed into service for the purpose.

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, district guardian minister Shivajirao Moghe and food and civil supplies minister Anil Deshmukh are some of the other dignitaries who are to attend the inauguration ceremony.
